John Muir's Dunbar |
The Association was constituted on 27 July 1994 as a charitable organisation founded by local people with the active support of the John Muir Trust. The Association's twin aims are:
Every year, American admirers of Muir travel thousands of miles and spare no expense to visit his birthplace in the High Street of Dunbar. In the past there has been no formal invitation, no international promotion and little official welcome for them when they arrive. Dunbar's John Muir Association is working in partnership with the local community and Council to provide a real welcome for these travellers, from a vibrant town looking to the future. The partnership hopes to make this possible by establishing The John Muir Centre where Muir's life and achievements will be celebrated.
The John Muir Centre that we envisage will be a busy place, convenient to the restaurants and shops of Dunbar. It will be a model of sustainable development, the first and foremost of its kind in Scotland; a national centre, a joy to work in, and a magnet even for visitors who have never before heard of John Muir. The John Muir Centre will be a beacon for current environmental issues; it will serve as a world-wide information centre using state of the art technologies; and it will take the lead in looking to the future by organising and supporting informed debate.
