[E] Further up the street is another building that was certain to have been a favourite with young John. When he came back to visit in 1893
'...there was no carriage from the Lorne Hotel, that used to be our home, so I took one from the St. George, that I remember well as Cassars Inn, that I passed every day on my way to school...'

The St. George Hotel was Dunbar's premier Inn [9]. On his way to the Grammar School, John watched the daily Mail Coaches, which ran between London and Edinburgh. They stopped to change horses and collect or deliver letters, goods and passengers. People often gathered to learn the latest news and look out for curiosities.
No doubt John also remembered the busy stables (now gone) in Cossars Wynd, the base for several grooms and ostlers, a Posting Master and two Postboys.
