Black Bull Inn and West Port

Further down the High Street is the West Port. If you head west along this street to [J] Lawson Place on the right you are at another of the Burgh boundaries, once marked by a gate [17].

Beside the last tenement on the south side some steps lead up to the 'Monk's Walk', a narrow path giving access to the back gardens and greens of the High Street. A useful route for a boy because

'...another favourite sport was climbing trees and scaling arden-walls ...(and)... we began to eat apples about as oon as they were formed, causing, of course, desperate gastric disturbances to be cured by castor oil...'
